Indonesia is a country with abundant biological resources and vast sea areas, with a forest coverage rate of up to 67.8%, and is rich in various tropical precious tree species such as ironwood, sandalwood, ebony, and armwood. In addition, Indonesia has vast sea areas and abundant fishing resources, such as Bagansia Biya on the east coast of Sumatra Island, which is a world-renowned large fishing ground. These natural resources provide abundant research materials and fields for scientific research.

Indonesia has also made progress in scientific research, especially after the establishment of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). BRIN aims to strengthen the national research and innovation ecosystem and improve the performance of research institutions by integrating multiple research institutions. A study compared the published results before integration (2015-2021) and after integration (2022-2023), and found that the integrated research institutions have improved in terms of the number of research results, growth rate, and the number of well-known journals publishing research.
